Taxonomy of the Lepidoptera

This is a taxonomy of the order Lepidoptera down to family level.

Lepidoptera is made up of moths; (46 superfamilies) and butterflies; (three superfamilies; Hedyloidea, Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea). Traditionally, all groups up until Glossata have been regarded as 'archaic', and groups up to Heteroneura as 'primitive'. 'Primitive groups' within Heteroneura cannot be defined as well as there are still some disputes of the proper relations between the groups within it. On the other hand, most families are well defined and they are commonly used by hobbyists and scientists alike.
